Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!

It’s time to ring in a new year – 2008! If your celebration is anything like mine, the clock will strike midnight, the crowd will cheer, the music will start and everyone will sing the famous Robert Burns song “Auld Lang Syne.” Despite this being an annual tradition, most of us sing the song but never really take the time to understand the meaning of it and how it pertains to us.

So, to prepare you for the night, I would like to share with you two versions of the song. First, the most widely accepted version and second, the translated version.

Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup
And surely I’ll be mine
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes
And pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
Sin’ auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin’ auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s hand, my trust fiere!
And gies a hand o’thine
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie-waught
For auld lang syne.
Old Long Ago
Should old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot
And old long ago?

Chorus:
For old long ago, my dear,
For old long ago,
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
For old long ago.

And surely you’ll buy your pint-cup
And surely I’ll buy mine
And we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
For old long ago?

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
Since old long ago.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dinner time,
But seas between us broad have roared,
Since old long ago.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend,
And give us a hand of yours,
And we’ll take a right-good-will-draught,
For old long ago.

I am sure “Auld Lang Syne” can mean many different things to each of us. For me, it represents a time for self-reflection and a time to give thanks. To look back on all of the things we have accomplished in our life, and the things we set out to accomplish but for one reason or another, did not.

I think it is a time to reflect on all the people who have shaped our lives and helped make us the person we are today: our parents, our brothers and sisters, our friends and relatives, our mentors and our fellow employees. I think this song is a toast saying “thank you” to all who have touched our lives in a special way.

Like the rearview mirror in a car, this song represents a look of all that has come before. But, when it is over, like the windshield in a car, it is time to look to the future, a time for hope and the possibilities that lie ahead.

As we bring 2007 to a close, I want to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all of you for your efforts, dedication and commitment this past year. In looking back, I believe we have made great progress as a company and as individuals; I am very proud of the Supplemental Health Care we have become.

As I look to the future, I am even more excited and enthusiastic about the company we can become in the year ahead. Great people combined with superior training and systems will make 2008 a great year for all of us.

Happy New Year and I wish each of you health, happiness and much success!
